Alliance for Science
By Ashutosh Upadhyay, Pratham Science Programme

Pratham Science Programme (PSP) has started working with other organisations under its mission 'Alliance for Science' to popularise science education in primary and secondary schools. A 4-day long workshop was organised at Science Resource Center, Village- Kulethi, Dist- Champawat  in Uttarakhand, in June. This center is established by a local NGO - Himalaya Water Service Tatha Vikas Avam Paryavaran Sanrakshan Samiti (HIMVATS) to assist science education in six nearby schools.

The workshop was designed for the students of class 5, 6, 7 and 8. Total 104 students took part in the event. Five topics, viz., nature exploration, human body, microscopic world, properties of air & water and demystifying sounds were covered in six sessions of 3 hrs each. The workshop was based on the philosophy of let the children discover the concept behind various scientific principles. They were allowed to make their own tools/devices, take observations and search for the pattern emerging from these activities. It was a lifetime experience for the children of these six schools, located in one of the remotest part of our country. Apart from children, some teachers of these schools and volunteers of HIMVATS were also present in the event.

A founder member of HIMVATS and presently professor of Physics at Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai Prof. P.B. Bisht monitored all the sessions very curiously and published his report on his personal blog - http://champawatsechennaitak.blogspot.in/2012/06/pratham-science-workshop-at-kulethi.html.

It is worth mentioning that HIMVATS and its science resource center were founded by an eminent scientist and a retired professor of Physics at IIT, Kanpur Prof. H.D. Bist and his four younger brothers. They belonged to a humbled farmer family of a nearby village Dadha and attained academic heights through their rigorous efforts. Through HIMVATS and its science resource center now they want to humbly repay their debts to their village school.

Incidentally, this is the second major intervention of Pratham Science programme in Uttarakhand under the Alliance for Science. The earlier event was organised in April 2011 with Himayalan Gram Vikas Samiti (HGVS) at Gangolihat (Dist- Pithoragarh) in the form of a four day long residential workshop. Eighty students of class 6, 7, 8 and 9 took part in the hugely successful workshop. After this event HGVS is now a strong partner of PSP in its journey of science popularisation.

Pratham Science Programme is planning more such events in Uttarakhand with a number of other organisations in near future.

  1. Science is an important thing in every day life. So that students should about the science. This blog described how students did their science program. According to one dictionary, is “the systematic study of the nature and behavior of the material and physical universe, based on observation, experiment, and measurement.” To do all of that is hard, often frustrating, work. Scientists struggle with experiments and observations for weeks, months, or even years. Sometimes their labors lead to dead ends, but in many cases they deliver benefits to mankind.
