A Learning Lab of Fun

A Learning Lab of Fun!By Ethan Reed

Welcome to the Pratham Learning Lab in Kamgar Nagar, Mumbai!
Today we’re going to pay a visit to the students and teachers inside and see what they’re up to. In the main room, there is a class going on.

This is a class for boys in the 10th standard. They are listening to their teacher. When the teacher is done with her lesson, the boys take to their books.

Meanwhile in the Computer Room to our right, some Pratham students are learning about basic computer programs.

Let’s meet a couple of the students!

This is Manish.  Manish is 15 years old.  His favourite subject is Marathi.  Although he lives in Bombay, his first language is Hindi.  He likes to learn Marathi because the teacher makes him feel comfortable learning to speak what many of his friends already know.

Let’s meet Jayprakash.  Jayprakash is also 15 years old.  His favourite subject is Geography because he loves reading maps and learning more about new and different places.  When I asked him why he likes the Learning Lab here in Kamgar Nagar, he says it’s because the teachers are so friendly and encouraging – it is a good learning environment.

Although it’s a boy’s class right now, there are some girls at the Learning Lab today as well!  This is Nilam, Pranali, and Preeti.  All three are in 10th standard and have been coming to the Kamgar Nagar Pratham Learning Lab for 7 months.

Nilam is 15 years old.  Nilam loves to study math.  She tells us that the teachers at the Learning Lab are good at making learning fun.

Preeti is 18 years old.  Preeti’s first language is Marathi, but her favourite subject is Hindi.  It comes to her very easily so she loves studying it.

Pranali is 17 years old. Her favourite subjects are maths and English.  She loves to solve difficult puzzles and to write stories in new languages.  Because of family needs, Pranali had stopped her studies.  But when a neighbour told her about the Pratham Learning Lab nearby, she felt inspired to come to the centre and begin studying again.

So that’s an introduction to the Pratham Learning Lab at Kamgar Nagar in Mumbai, one of hundreds of Urban Learning Centres that Pratham has started and maintained throughout India.
