ASER 2012 in Punjab
by Chandrika Rathore

It was not until we arrived at a village in Moga district of Punjab to witness our first ever ASER survey did we realize that to read/hear about ASER and to actually witness the ASER survey are two very different things. A one day survey showed us what we did not realize fully, in many conversations.

How well is every child learning?
By Namrta Kaushal

There is an increasing pressure on the average primary school teacher, especially with large, overcrowded classes of pupils with varying abilities and languages. Understandably it can be difficult for the teacher to flag a child's difficulties. Sometimes they can just slip through the net in the early years of primary school and their learning difficulties and abilities remain unidentified and therefore, unsupported. Hence, Pratham has recognized the need for assessing children for their better learning. An educational assessment can promote greater understanding of academic performance and achievement. Also, an educational assessment can identify the underlying issues that may be preventing a child from achieving his or her academic potential. A child who is excelling at school may require support and enrichment within the classroom.  With the intention of assessing the learning level of children, Pratham Delhi Education Initiative conducted about 20 ‘Assessment Melas’ across Delhi this October.

Parrho Jehanabad – a model of learning in the making
By Boban Varghese Paul

If you are a regular to this website or familiar with Pratham’s Read India model, you might question what is different about what you see in this picture. Just like anywhere else in Pratham’s Block Excellence Program blocks this seems to be a middle aged volunteer who decided to spend her free time teaching a set of children, who were found to be unable to read stories or short passages. The next picture of a man doing the same thing also seems to be a similar thing right?
If this is what you think, then I must say that you have been deceived!

A Day with ASER Volunteers

By Dalip K. Seth

On 16th September 2012 – Dalip joined the ASER volunteers at a remote village, Dalod, in Ahmedabad District. This is an outsiders view of the ASER Survey.

8.00 a.m. in the morning, we left for Dalod, almost 120 kms away from Ahmedabad, passing the towns of Viramagam and Mandal, off the main highway.  We passed through a two- lane state highway, both sides of which were heavily drenched with the recent rain and the small plants of castor were barely out of the ground, due to delayed sowing, for miles and miles. I later heard from the farmers in the village, that they were happy to have regained, what was virtually a ‘lost year’ for them, due to delayed rains.
